Awareness And Making Connections

Hello, hello! Last week I was in the San Francisco area (for my family’s first home exchange experience) enjoying every bit of its majestic beauty. It made me think of things that demand our attention. I found myself being very present when I was out in Northern California… all of us being pulled away from our devices and not wanting to miss a single piece of it. Being present around untouched nature is not hard to do, but when I’m back in a busy city like New York I feel like I’m making a point not to be staring down at a phone. Should I move to the side for the person too busy texting so they continue not watching their step? Sometimes I’m tempted to just stop in front of a person.

Do you guys find yourself tapping into thoughtless awareness?

I find it difficult to not give my attention to the now, including the details. I know that reflects in my taste and how that is guided by how my body responds to things. Recently, I’ve been noticing how flavors nourish my body. For instance, I found that lots of sugary things keep me in a place where I don’t feel as motivated or dedicated to something, and it’s a difficult habit to break. It’s like a lazy comfort for me. Earthier flavors really heighten my focus, and sour refreshes me. Or for instance… if I have dried fruit I balance the very sweet flavor with a dense nut, or else my thought goes on auto-pilot and I start to get mindless. I’ve also found that I’ve developed a heightened sensor for specific additives, in turn giving my body the chance to communicate clearly. I’m curious to know… what are some things you’ve recently discovered about yourself?

Right now it’s snowing, and this post is going back to the very end of summer in Florida.

1) I packed fresh figs, a salad and smoked salmon for the airplane ride… ended up having it as brunch because of a delay; 2) Beach front apartment in South Beach; 3) Driving over McArthur Causeway at sunset; 4) Having traditional Cuban desserts in the heart of Little Havana; 5) Bird watching in my parents’ back yard; 6) Dinner consisted of summer fruits for one last hurrah!

My parents befriended one of our future home exchangers from Bordeaux, and they’ve been having dinner parties together…

So while I was there we thought it would be nice to invite them over for dinner.

Honoring My Body

Hey everyone. So I haven’t written a post myself in a bit, and usually when I don’t post it’s because of two reasons. I don’t have time, or I’m not sure what I want to say. Granted this blog is considered a food blog, it’s also a place where I find parallels and intersections between food and philosophy, or I may simply want to tell a story. Well, today I was talking to a very close friend of mine (some of you may know her as “Veggie Girl”, which she is no longer hehehe). We were actually reunited the other day at her dance competition!

Anyway, so I was talking to her and we were discussing bodies. At one point I had mentioned that when I think about all of the tasks our bodies do, in a matter of time that we can’t even grasp or imagine… well, that is something that inspires me to respect it. You see, with my soul and ego I have more control over the cause and effect. But with my physical body, I can’t entirely decide how my body will respond. I definitely play a role though. What I subject it to whether it’s food, environments, thoughts, or what have you… all play a role in how my body functions. So that’s what I want to share today. The idea of respecting my body, and what that means to me as of late.

I’ve been becoming more intuitive with knowing what to do when I feel out of balance. I’ve also become more aware of what may throw me out of balance, and gravitating towards certain foods depending on how I feel.

PTA: Present Tense Affirmation

In my last post I said I was EXPLODING with information. Well, some of that information I’m going to withhold… for right now. But I’ll start out with some things I’ve been enjoying this week.

Rode bikes in the city for the first time, along the Hudson River

It’s such a nice way to wind down from the day. After running through Central Park, I’ll head out with friends afterwards for long, leisurely bike rides. Then wash off, stretch for awhile, and do something very grounding afterwards. One thing I like to do is give my feet a nice massage with a peppermint foot lotion. I used to think to myself, “oh it would be nice to paint my nails… or give my tired muscles a massage” and not do it because I thought I didn’t have enough time. When really all it may take is just five minutes. How many people find themselves saying “I don’t have enough time“?

Actually, I hear that a lot with cooking. Recent things in my life though have gotten me to take a step back and just relax. To allow myself to just go with it, and not go into shallow breathing panic-mode if someone on the street stops me to talk about Matilda for 10 minutes. Before, I would stop, but I’d feel anxious the whole time. One of my recent mottos: whatever.

Here’s an interesting link I came across a few months ago that explains the title of the post: emotional freedom technique

Of course, there are times when I am rushed, but that’s another thing I’ve worked on… just saying it. I used to shy away from that because I didn’t want to offend anyone. I can reflect on the various causes of my feeling this way, but just behaving in a different way in the present helps the most. Just doing it. Everyone leads a different life, at times a life with demands.

So one day, while on a no-rush walk…

I stumbled upon a mulberry bush

I didn’t want to take too many, since I’m sure the other park animals also eat them.

A breakfast bowl with: diced cold apple, toasted hemp seeds, goat’s milk kefir, mulberries, and a sprinkle of cinnamon + nutmeg

A very Perricone friendly breakfast. Perri-who?

Some of you may have heard of renowned dermatologist, Dr. Perricone. Perhaps you’ve read his informative books and seen his skincare line. Or maybe you caught him taking away Larry King’s cup of coffee, for a cup of green tea instead. Anyway, here’s one part of the explosion!

I’ll be sharing recipes and nutritional insights on featured ingredients on a weekly basis over at the blog: the Daily Perricone. This has been in the works for awhile, and I’ve been biting my tongue the whole time.

This week was my first post on the blog, and I’m looking forward to sharing recipes on there.

The recipe can be found here, and for some interesting facts about peas click over here.

I’ll let you guys know about them, and if you follow me on my Facebook fan page then you’ll get more frequent updates as well. I also like to start discussions on there, share snapshots, and love to answer any questions anyone else may have! So check it out if you haven’t already.

My recipe for a simple summer soup.

Here’s a sneak peak look at some more upcoming news.

I’ll be featured in FIRST RUN magazine’s debut issue, which I’ll keep you posted on when it’s off the press. FIRST RUN is a quarterly running magazine, that is unlike any other running magazine out there. I’m truly excited to see it, and I think there will be lots of beautiful imagery and very interesting content to match. Also, keep tabs on what they’re up to through their Twitter.

Now on to the biggest news for me right now…

Nothing To Do But Float In The Ocean

Here’s a little recap of my time down in Florida, which was mostly spent on the Gulf coast.

It seemed like a secret spot.

Guest Of Honor: The Liquid Lady

Good day everyone! I hope you all enjoyed those breakfast ideas in the last post. Perhaps you had a quiet moment to yourself over the weekend. Maybe you found yourself spitting mimosas through your nose at brunch. Or who knows, maybe both!

Today I wanted to share something special with you all. I asked my soul mate and fellow lover of all things coconut, Sway, if she would like to write something for my blog. She has a consciousness about her, a steady disposition, and a profound relationship with life. Plus, I love her a whole lot! I was so happy when she was just as excited about writing a post, as I was. She’s actually graced us with her presence on here before… a couple little reunions in Richmond (made complete with a hot chocolate request since it was written in invisible ink on the menu), and also when we went on a road trip to Florida.

Sway has traveled and lived around the world practically her whole life. She grew up in England, Japan and Germany before moving back to the US for her senior year of high school. Her travels have taken her to North Africa and all over Europe. When she came into this world she emerged from the crest of a breathtaking wave out in California. Dancing her way through life, she currently perfects her pointes at Alvin Ailey. She is also a freelance writer for Interview, is currently working on a book/magazine, and a few creative side projects. A lady on the move, especially when she’s running. And when she’s not on the move she finds stillness in her yoga practice. Of course, there is always room for older Woody Allen movies that make her laugh until she cries.  So without further ado, here’s our guest of honor. Let’s start things off with a nice, refreshing beverage…

Welcome to Canada!

Good day to everyone and greetings from Canada! I arrived in Toronto on Wednesday night, and I’ll be staying here till Canada Day. Then my next stop is New York.

First, I needed to motivate myself to pack for an 18-day trip.

A pot of mint tea to help me relax.
Thankfully I had someone cute to help me pack… or atleast keep me company.
Whilst I had a super skin-tightening clay mask that always makes my eyes bulge out.
Progress!
Packed a bagel for the trip.
Sprouted Wheat Onion Poppyseed Bagels with cream cheese, marinated portobello mushrooms, avocado, and some cucumber slices.

Alvarado Street Bakery makes great bread along with other things like bagels, rolls, and pizza bread! My old roommate would always get these bagels and they smelled so awesome when she’d toast them.

Fig Almond cake for snacking–check.

When we got to the airport there was a flight delay. It worked in our favor since we weren’t sure if we’d make it in time for check-in since it was an international flight, plus we had Matilda.

Oh, and that bagel sandwich? It was so good!

We finally made it, and the cutest Canadian ever granted us permission to enter the country. My mom and I should’ve taken him up on his offer as tour-guide… even if he was just kidding!

Checking out her new surroundings.
First morning I decided to go downstairs with my mom to have breakfast.

They get their scrumptious bread from a local bakery, and the fried potatoes reminded me of Bratkartofeln. Alongside with a bowl of cottage cheese topped with fruits, muesli, and nuts.

My mom looked lovely before she headed into work.
Around lunchtime my mom and a few of her co-workers swooped me off to a Vietnamese restaurant.

I ordered the stir-fried vegetables with tofu. It was a simple meal, but I’m not sure what was in the sauce… or what it was but my stomach was swimming for the rest of the day.

Also tried a funky looking lychee drink.
Later on we went on a real food adventure–a Canadian grocery store!

My goodness! The produce section was HUGE! Foods from all over the world. Lots from Asia and South America. My mom even found granadia, also known as passion fruit. I also found a ton of kabochas, but there’s no way of preparing them here… unless the hotel lets me use their kitchen.

I was amazed by all of the cheeses and breads that were at the store–these are some Canadian specialties.

They had a shelf just of German breads, and different kinds of pretzels to choose from. There was also a freezer-full of gluten-free options as well!

And lookie here what I was reunited with!

They stopped carrying these in America because people may choke on the small toys inside -cough-stupid lawsuits-cough-.

Milk chocolate goodness!!!
Beware you could choke on these, bahaha!
I was curious about these… they reminded me of a less saltier version of Bugles–tasty.
Got some of the best hummus ever (you can smell the caramelized onions!), and I wish the US had lentil salads like this on the regular.

I would gladly buy pre-packaged food like this!

Enjoyed over a bed of lettuce and various sprouts.
We also got a loaf of Swiss fruit and muesli bread.
Ze cheeeese
Cheese monster
Such a creamy and oily texture under the rind.
Pantry full–check.
Fridge full–check.
My mom spotted fresh gooseberries at the store as well.
We also got this interesting tea to try–this is what it looks like when a tea bag is holding on for dear life.
I also found some chamomile flowers when I was on a walk with Matilda.

This is just the beginning of my trip so there will be many more recaps! So far I really think it’s neat that everything here is in French and English. I’ve been reading everything in French with my best accent, and just having fun with it. I wanted to go on a run and explore some more. Alas it started raining heavily so that will have to wait.

In other news, Meg has started a new tradition on her blog called “Feature Friday”, and she asked me to be on her blog! Meg is one of those girls that has a good (and incredibly beautiful) head on her shoulders. She’s got a great outlook and such an awesome sense of humor. So check out her blog if you don’t know her already, and you can also check out my post right over here!

I hope you all have a great weekend ahead of you.

How do you guys like to get to know the places you visit?

Anyone have any recommendations for while I’m here?

"Must Have Been Something I Ate" Vega Book Giveaway!

I thought I’d surprise you all today with a special post. It won’t be about my last days in Richmond. That’ll come soon though! However, for today’s post I’ve got something wonderful in store for you. You’ll see…

First off, my blog is now available to download as an app for the Android, which you can check out over here.

Recently, I was contacted by Sequel Naturals on behalf of Vega to be apart of the launch of Peggy Kotsopoulos’s book “Must Have Been Something I Ate”. At first I was reminded of my mini-crush on Brendan Brazier–creator of Vega. After I snapped back to reality I read that the book is about the mind, body, and food connection. My interest was peaked! As some of you may know I am very much interested in Ayurveda, and the whole philosophy of seeing the “whole” as something made up lots of connections. I started perusing through the book when it came in the mail, and I read it more in depth afterwards. While reading this book I came to an important decision. A few days ago I decided to go off birth control. I had been thinking about it for awhile, but reading this book just made something click. I am the kind of person who finds acceptance in things and has faith in positivity. I feel like this is a step I’m taking towards feeling whole and true to myself. A way of me showing myself that I trust my body.

They sent me a copy of the book along with some Vega products that are called for in some recipes.

This book has so much useful information, and you don’t feel like you’re being preached at or bombarded with “you should do this, you should do that” lines. She has such an easy going style of writing, and just tells you straight up about the wonders of how the body works in relation to food and lifestyle. Peggy also throws in some humorous relatable examples to help better explain the concepts. There’s one line that she repeats a few times in the book that I love, “your body craves nutrients, not calories.” Of course our bodies do need “calories”, but that’s not a fun way to think of food. It’s just so amazing when you think of  foods as nourishing your body.

For instance, it’s neat that I can get my daily dose of selenium by eating 1-2 brazil nuts, rather than a pill.

Peggy discusses the connections between food with mood, weight, beauty, and overall health. Then at the end you can put your knowledge to use and choose which of her recipes you want to make! Or you can skip ahead and be enticed by the tasty looking pictures.

I’ve already made a couple of her recipes already, but I’ve got many more that I want to make–recipes I will definitely be posting about.

Chai Tea Latte
A delicious way to calm the nerves.

I thought of Natalie as I was sipping this since she loves almond butter and cups of cafe au lait.

I also made the Creamy Broccoli Soup.

This soup is packed with so much flavor! It’s because most of the ingredients are raw except for broccoli, which is lightly steamed so its nutritional benefits are fully reaped. I didn’t know that broccoli had the ability to alter the metabolism of estrogen. In turn aiding in the detoxification of the excesses of this hormone–what I am paying attention to now that I decided to go off the pill. Anyway, back to the recipe! It’s amazing how creamy it is as well, but with no cream? Here’s the reason why this soup is so flavorful and tasty: broccoli, celery, yellow onion, garlic, fresh ginger, lemon juice, dried oregano, black pepper, sea salt, veggie stock, olive oil, and avocado. I went ahead and topped it with Peggy’s recommendations: pumpkin seeds, cubed avocado, arame, dulse, and cayenne.

I love that her recipes aren’t intimidating, and come with a little tidbit to how your body will thank you for this food.

“The heart has reasons that reason cannot know."

I had planned for this post to be another one I’d been working on, but I wanted to get this off my chest and I think Blaise Pacal’s words put it quite nicely. The other day Gillian, Kailey, a few others ladies, and I were discussing the topic of justification. Specifically, the justification of food. It’s funny because this is mostly a food blog, but I don’t label myself as anything more detailed than that. I know that I get tagged a healthy living blog, which there’s nothing wrong with, but I personally don’t see myself as that. I’m just a young woman who likes to share some things that perhaps others can enjoy. I also love to cook things out of scratch, so that means I simply use food that comes from this good earth.

Frankly, I don’t like how the word “healthy” gets used sometimes. Moreover, I don’t like dubbing things as “junk”. If someone wants to “healthify” recipes go ahead, but for some reason it bothers me when people say that. It keeps that mentality of x vs. y going–because this bread is made with apple sauce instead of oil, and a cookie made with butter can get a bad rap. Take out the oil, and that may make a person feel less anxiety. There’s nothing wrong with apple sauce for moisture or for taste, but if it’s done to avoid feelings of guilt I think one should think twice then. Let’s do ourselves a favor and catch ourselves when we start comparing. Instead, let each thing simply be what it is. In the end, what do these ideas really amount to? A cookie may be pivotal because of how delicious it tastes, but as far as the end all be all of someone’s diet… it doesn’t even come close. Granted, perhaps if no one sought out an alternative option for people who can’t digest things or choose a certain lifestyle some of my favorite things probably wouldn’t exist; like almond milk, coconut milk ice cream, some gluten-free granolas, and agave. Now, I know I am speaking in very general terms here but it’s for the sake of not writing a novel. I realize there are some who have diabetes or other dietary circumstances, but I think you know what I mean. I’m discussing the mentality.

I think what has a lot to do with the issue of making food more than what it really is, is the power of words. Sure actions can speak louder than them, but words also have the power to reinforce ideas. I mean that’s why I’m taking the time to write this. Don’t we all start to believe what we tell ourselves? These ideas of right and wrong, what makes us happy, or how things “should be”. How often do you hear people saying something is better because it has less calories, less fat, or less carbs? Sometimes we get bombarded with so much information that we forget to just live. Fortunately, we have the power and choice to step aside from the noise and not let it take over. I like to call this taking responsibility for ourselves.

On my blog when I was focusing on foods that were more beneficial for my liver, I was a little weary of writing about it. The information I was finding during my research was all very interesting, but I was afraid that some would focus on that too much. I know that I didn’t take it too seriously, but I didn’t want it to become what my blog was about. Acknowledging the wonderful benefits that some foods have is such a gift, but it is not my focus. I eat what I think tastes wonderful! I eat things that I would want to share with others if they were sitting right next to me, or pass along a recipe that could bring a person back to another place or time. That’s what I love about food. I don’t feel the need to justify what I’m eating because of its nutritional value or lack thereof. I eat what I like. I like ketchup with mayonnaise, and I like cured manchego. In fact, there’s nothing in this world that can replace the complex flavors of cheese. I like white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. I also like coconut oil mixed in almost everything, and sweet potatoes are just so good. I think olives are gross, nor have I ever really liked fish. I like sandwich bread, artisan bread, and sprouted bread. I think high fructose corn syrup is pointless as an ingredient, but has become an ethical issue and really just exists to give some people a paycheck and save some money. But hey, that’s just me. You are you, and that’s also cool!

Do you ever unnecessarily find yourself justifying why you do the things you do?

On that note, let us enjoy some tasty food, shall we?

Chocolate was on my grocery list last week.

Any Chocolove bar I’ve tried has been a special treat. Not to mention, they come with a love poem inside. So you can love the chocolate your eating, and feel loved too!

Remember this place? Ah yes, it's only natural that I went to the chocolate shop.

(Oh how I wish the weather would be warm enough to go out with bare legs!)

I'm actually containing my reaction to how surprisingly tasty this bar was.

I love crystallized ginger, but I wasn’t sure how this would taste. Adventures always involve some sort of risk though! The ginger wasn’t overpowering the dark chocolate, and they complemented each other wonderfully–you get bits of sweet and spicy ginger while the dark chocolate melts in your mouth.

I wanted to do something a little different for breakfast.

One baby step in making my 15 lb. bag of basmati rice a little lighter–”Project Clean Out” is still in progress!

Hot Rice Cereal with Dried Mango and Toasted Coconut

In addition to the recipe, I chopped up some medjool dates, stirred in some coconut oil, and also toasted some hemp seeds with sea salt. I love the nutty and roasted flavor that hemp seeds get when you toast them. It kind of reminds me of popcorn actually. Anyway, I had an inkling that it would be a tasty addition to this sweet recipe, and indeed it was.

Speaking of popcorn... I was greeted by this man at the door.

On the way back from my last trip to Florida I tried these new-to-me chips called “Popcorners“. They were one of the options for snacks on my JetBlue flight, and I was curious about them. I ended up liking them so much that I asked if I could have another bag! Sadly, I had never seen these chips in stores, but I wanted to try more. The people over at Popcorners kindly sent me this funny box filled with all of their flavors! The texture of popped food is so satisfying to me.

I think it's the crunch!

He decided to surprise my roommate.

A couple times actually.

Have you tried these before? Or even heard of them?

After trying all of the flavors, I’ve come up with a list that goes from my favorite to least favorite (but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it!): Kettle, White Cheddar, Butter, Cheesy Jalapeno, and Sea Salt. Now I just want to munch on them! You can find out more about them on their Facebook or Twitter sites as well. Also, their website has creative ways to use their chips in all sorts of recipes!

The other weekend I picked up a bag of Bare Fruit dried d'anjou pears at the store.

I was curious as to what they’d be like. They’re great for snacking on, but I wanted to try them with something else.

Topped with sliced almonds and leftover streusel.

Making oatmeal a bit more deliciously complicated.

I had some rice noodles just sitting in my pantry.

While searching on the CHOW website I came across this recipe which used rice noodles. I think next up I want to make Pad Thai.

Tofu and Broccolini Pad See Ew

I omitted the eggs since I’m not a fan of them. Anyway, I have enough for leftovers to have throughout the week!

In other news, I recently went to a casting call for a commercial for Richmond Fashion Week with one of my favorite persons, David!

[gigya width="440" height="420" src="http://v7.tinypic.com/player.swf?file=2kofo1&s=7" quality="high" flashvars="gig_lt=1296412375972&gig_pt=1296413371035&gig_g=1&gig_n=wordpress" wmode="tranparent" ]

I ended up not being chosen to be a part of the commercial, but that’s alright. Just giving things a shot is enough for me sometimes.

Anyway, I’d like to know your thoughts about the beginning of this post.

Marching to the Beat of Your Own Drum

Matilda told me to send you all kisses!

Matilda told me to send you all kisses!

In my last post I wrote about doing things that suit you. I feel like this has been an interesting topic for discussion in the blogging world. People are trying out new ways of eating, and seeing what works for them. I think that’s wonderful that people are a) trying out something new, b) becoming more aware of what their bodies can or can’t handle, and c) listening to that internal cue. What I like to do is read about different takes on food, and add it to the filing cabinet in my brain – either it stays in a folder, or I apply it to my own little thang. Often times it’s hard to listen to ourselves because we’re bombarded with things telling us “this is the right way”,” what you’re doing is wrong!” Infomercials anyone? Anyway, I’ve been very curious about food for awhile now, but before I use to be very shy about trying new things. Of course part of the reason was that I didn’t cook. I just ate what was put in front of me. If I didn’t like it then I made a fuss. Okay, okay get to the point already! What I’ve learned works for me so far is… almost everything! The only dietary limit I put on myself is no meat, chicken, or fish. I wouldn’t really call my decision to be vegetarian a “limit” though, I see it as more of a personal choice. Vegetarianism has actually opened so many culinary doors for me, that’s partly why I’ve been able to stick with it for nearly 7 years. I haven’t gotten bored or frustrated! I also know that my tummy can’t handle eggs, or cow’s milk – unless it’s in yogurt form, and cheeses are kept to a minimum. However, I know that if I were to cut out dairy completely, the low level of tolerance I have for it already, would probably diminish to nothing. And I love cheese and yogurt too much! Another example for me is pasta. I use to have a horrible time digesting it. But I’ve learned that in smaller amounts, I can handle it just fine. My mom on the other hand can barely tolerate flour breads and pastas. For the most part, she is very adamant about not eating foods she knows will cause her trouble afterwards – but sometimes things just taste too good to pass up. My dad is lucky and was born with a stomach made of steel. He can handle anything! My uncle is a wonder to watch while he eats. I usually don’t watch people eat, but this is like a show I swear! For breakfast he will have a jug, yes a jug, filled to the brim with oatmeal and topped with fruits. Then he’ll have a massive plate entirely covered with rice, eggs, and fish. But his body needs that for fuel since he’s an athlete. He knows that if he were to eat less than he does, he can forget training because his body won’t run on anything less. So, as you can see, everyone is different. Food can spark curiosity in people, but sometimes it gets a bad rap. I hope for you all that food is not seen as the enemy, just remember to stay true to yourselves – and your tastebuds!

Okay, so enough of that! On to something visually digestible.

Check out those huge kernels! This corn hails from Bogota, Colombia.

Check out those huge kernels! This type of corn hails from Bogota, Colombia.

I thought this deserved it's very own plate.

I thought this deserved it's very own plate.

I followed this recipe to make Black Bean and Rice Cakes with Chipotle Remoulade and Roasted Corn Salsa. I was surprised that my attempt at making cakes actually worked!

Mixing it up with a black plate

Over the French green beans I made a quick sauce out of Dijon mustard, almond oil, some sugar, roasted garlic, rice wine vinegar, and s&p. It tasted wonderful with the green beans! Oh, some 411, (my dad wasn’t aware of this) remember to boil your green beans!

The other day I got a knock on the door just as I was about to leave to make my delivery. “UPS!”

A package from Amazing Grass!

A package from Amazing Grass!

I got some more goodies to review. So far I’ve tried one of their GREENSuperFood packets. At first I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it, and I was preparing my army of tastebuds for defeat. My army was surprised with another victory! I mixed the powder with orange juice, so I know that combination is a winner. However, I couldn’t imagine just mixing this with water. Blegh! They have flavored varieties as well, but I haven’t tried those yet. I, of course did my taste test in the convenient cup they sent me. Thanks guys! You can check out what they have here. I’m looking forward to trying out more things. I have a trip coming up this week, and I think these will come in handy since I’ll be kitchen-less and on the beach the whole day. I’ve got to balance off the piña coladas and Stoli cosmos with something!

Speaking of my trip, I’ll be leaving on Wednesday afternoon and staying here for some nights. I’m so excited. My family and I have gone on little weekend trips, but we haven’t been on a real vacation in a long time. Even though we’re only two hours away from our vacation spot, it’s still going to seem like we’re away from it all. I can’t wait to wake up, and the only thing I have to do is whatever I feel like doing. I’m definitely going to indulge! Indulge is such a seductive sounding word isn’t it?

Two nights ago dad juiced again, so I had some more leftover pulp to work with. What’d I decide to do this time?

I baked a loaf of carrot cornbread.

I baked a loaf of carrot cornbread.

After seeing Gena’s Guacanara recipe, I couldn’t help but come to the realization that the pulp – being mostly carrots – would be a wonderful addition to a marinara sauce!

It gave so much body to the sauce.

It gave so much body to the sauce.

The pulp is basically all fibre so it’s very filling! It ended up reminding me more of a bolognese sauce since it was so thick! I opted to serve these on top of some corn noodles and with some balsamic baked tofu. And on the side I came up with a little something that tasted so much like pizza! It was so easy and quick to put together it could be a perfect snack.

A mini-bagel with muenster cheese, avocado, and some of the "sauce" I made.

Another trick I learned in beauty school is to brush masks on with a flat paint brush.

Yesterday I went on an adventure with my dad. We were on the prowl for kabocha, which I will now call the elusive kabocha! I was also on the look-out for some fresh figs. I really want to make a bowl of oatmeal inspired by Eliza and Maya with these little beauties! Alas, I found neither, but I did find some other wonderful things, which I’ll be sharing with you guys tomorrow. Much like Napoleon I don’t accept defeat easily, so the search is still on! Vive la recherche!

I hope you all enjoy this beautiful Saturday and the holiday!
